A new poem by Michael Glover

Make Ready

song without musical accompaniment
for Barry Fantoni

Make ready for the aftermath.
Never too soon to be preparing.
Much burning to be done.
Much sieving of old memories.

Make ready for the aftermath.
Return all teeth to the dentist.
This house to be dismantled, stone by stone.
Tunes to be unthreaded.

Make ready for the aftermath.
Laugh at the stories which pleased you.
Say goodbye to one and all.
Let skin and bone be sufficient.

Make ready for the aftermath.
Learn to breathe steadily.
Weep at the world through open eyes.
Lock the door before dismantling the door lock.
